week 1
I have been in NoDak for a week.
I am sooo happy that my mom made the drive with me, because there were stretches of road that were killer. BORING! We stopped the first night in Miles City, Montana because my boss didn't save me a room in Williston. Thank god I decided to call and check, otherwise we would have been driving back.
We got into Williston last Sunday and it seems like a semi-decent place. It really reminds me of a jacked up on steriods version of Burley, except people in Burley know what customer service is. Mom and I went to dinner one night at Applebees, and I will never go back to this one ever again in my entire life. The service was awful and the people in charge have no business running a business. It was awful.
This oil boom has brought thousands of people to the area with no where to live, made price gouging the norm, and pissed the locals off. I have yet to meet a true 'local.' I have been told there aren't many true locals in the area, so if you find you it's like find a four leaf clover.
Work has been ok, other than the hotel I am 'training' at is still a disorganized mess. The desk staff is poorly trained, the accounts are soo messed up it could take me weeks to get them to a better spot, and it's hard to find people to work. This is going to be sooo different for me. Thank god I will be sent on business trips in a few months to get all my IHG stuff out of the way, it will be a very welcome break from this NoDak craziness.
I won't have a place to move into until spring, so I will hotel living for a while. It could be worse, so I am thankful I have a comfortable bed and my own bathroom which is more than some people have in this area.

"You are going WHERE?"
"Williston is the county seat of Williams County, North Dakota, USA. The population was 14,716 at the 2010 Census, making it the ninth largest city in North Dakota." Thanks, Wikipedia.
Yes, I will be moving ND and no, I haven't lost my mind. Besides the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers a brand new hotel is awaiting my arrival. I am super excited to be landing this new position.
Wish me luck, because I am going to need it!

a look back
2010 was, for the most part, a great year. It started out very rocky, but progressed into something fantastic.
The end of March I was promoted(finally!) to the General Manager. It has been a long, challenging, and rewarding nine months. I had to straighten a lot of things out, teach my employees a lot, and learn to let go of some things. I have grown a lot this past year as an employee and manager, and I still have a lot to learn.
Also in March, Mike and I FINALLY moved into our own apartment. Thank god. It has been great. We got lucky and have great friends for neighbors. We BBQ and drink when it's nice out and we love it! The unfortunate part is we have a set of impossible neighbors. One has a tiny dog that poops in our part of the yard and she never cleans up after it, the other set thinks we are horrible people because we drink and a few people smoke. But we really do like it for the most part.
Mike and I were able to go to Casper and see his family in September. It was a great week and we enjoyed all of it. I met a lot of really nice people, and it is something we will have to do again. In October I had to go to New Jersey for training. I was not looking forward to it; I was dreading it. It turned out great. I met a few really great people as well as having the opportunity to make some great contacts in our corporate office.
2011 is going to be just as great, if not better!
